STEN MK II

A personal project to create a game ready STEN MK II submachine gun using Substance Painter to create PBR textures. The model can be inspected below using the Sketchfab iframe.

The focus for this project was to improve my texturing and baking skills. So I chose a relatively simple but recognisable gun to model, the British STEN MK II. It was a good opportunity for me to add some variation as the gun often was produced with different attachments like the alternate stock and silencer.

I created the most recognisable variant with the typical metal finish complete with the expected wear and tear of a used weapon.

During research, I didn't come across any STEN guns complete with camouflage. So I created one based on the well known military 'Flecktarn' style camo.

There were some notable parts of this particular weapon including the noticeable welding around certain components. This effect was achieved simply by creating a custom brush and importing it into Substance Painter.

There was some variation in the pattern on the metal on certain components of this weapon. As shown above, the trigger housing had a brushed metal effect. I wanted to pay close attention to these unique features as it breaks the weapon up into more noticeable components that are clearly manufactured in varying ways. This sort of attention to detail is essential when re-creating  recognisable assets.

Inspiration came from Battlefield V to create this alternate design. I feel the customisation options in that game are fairly underwhelming, so I thought I'd have a go myself, I'm happy with the result and feel I learned a lot through the texturing process in terms of optimisation and creating realistic looking textures.

Model created in Maya with textures designed in Substance Painter and Photoshop.
